Grant Awarded!

On August 1, 2022, the Parks and Recreation Department submitted a grant application to Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) for the Local Park Grant for improvements at Bowling Green Park. This grant provides funding for 50% of the proposed construction.

On January 26, 2023, the TPWD Commission passed funding to award numerous Local Park Grants statewide. The Parks and Recreation department (PARD) is excited to announce that Bowling Green Park received a grant of $598,532. The 18-acre community park currently has a community garden, playground, picnic tables, benches, and a small fruit orchard. In January 2021, the park underwent an extensive master plan process with the community. Council approved the master plan on August 2, 2021, which featured an enhanced community garden that meets ADA accessibility standards, the addition of parking, a pedestrian bridge, and extensions of trails to provide connections to the surrounding neighborhoods and city facilities. In addition, the project will include a pavilion, benches, and landscaping improvements throughout the park.

Parks and Recreation will start the grant process with TPWD this summer and does not anticipate the Notice to Proceed from TPWD until Winter 2023/2024. With this timeline, construction is estimated to begin Summer of 2024.
