Denton Vision Zero Action Plan

The City's Parks and Recreation Department owns a 389.49-acre developed parcel named North Lakes Park, located at 2001 W. Windsor Drive Denton, TX 76201. Recently, the City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022, which prioritizes the development of an inclusive playground within the City. In light of this, the Lily Cantu Playground - a current 2-5 &amp; 5-12 playground - has been identified as the ideal location for a brand-new destination all-inclusive park, which will attract visitors from across the region. This project will undergo a robust process of through a robust process of public engagement, focus groups, and board/commission feedback, ensuring that the final result is a playground that everyone can enjoy. The project is currently pursuing funding opportunities, and the current scope of work includes the probable cost estimation, needs assessment, conceptual designs, as well as the preparation of 30% construction documents, which will lay the groundwork for the project's eventual construction. These valuable pieces of information will be incorporated into the master plan for North Lakes Park's improvements, creating a unique all-inclusive playground that is set to become a regional attraction.Playgrounds are an essential component of child development, providing opportunities to improve physical, cognitive, sensory, and social skills. The new playground design will be 'barrier-free' and feature areas of play with universal design features that cater to individuals of all abilities, including those with physical and mental disabilities. These may include rehabilitation equipment, nature-based activities, and garden/landscape experiences for children and adults of all abilities.With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, the new North Lakes Park Lily Cantu All-inclusive playground is set to become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the community, offering a safe and engaging space for everyone to enjoy.

The Southeast Denton Area Plan proposed study area is generally bounded by McKinney Street to the north, Bell Avenue and Dallas Drive to the west, Teasley Lane and Shady Oaks Drive to the south, and Woodrow Lane to the east, encompassing approximately 600 acres of land.The main reason for the Area Plan is to build community trust and a partnership with the community, identify those areas that are important to the residents and stakeholders for preserving the current cultural character and land uses, as well as those areas where change can occur, and ultimately create implementation strategies that will respond to the development pressure being experienced in the study area.At a minimum, the following topics will be addressed in this Area Plan, as well as any additional key topics that identified as part of the public engagement efforts: lund Use and Compatibility; Multi-modal Transportation; Housing; Infill and Redevelopment; Historic Preservation; Open Space and Recreational Amenities; and Infrastructure.The project will take approximately 12 months with a completion timeframe from March 2023 - March 2024.

Phase II of the ADA Transition Plan will review all City buildings and associated Park properties. This analysis will include, but is not limited to, evaluations of accessible parking, path of travel to building entrances, and building interior elements for public areas; as well as accessible parking, all sidewalks/paths/trails within parks, and all amenities within parks (including restrooms, buildings, playgrounds, etc.) to assess their condition with respect to compliance with ADA requirements.In September 2018, the City contracted with Kimley Horn Associates Inc., for Phase I of the ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. Determining housing affordability is complex and commonly a combination of factors within the housing system that includes household incomes, housing costs, housing supply and housing demand.Denton&#39;s unique mix of historical investment, current inventory, development practices and future growth all shape any potential housing strategies defined by policy and investment. 2024 Airport Rates and Fees Discussion

Join the City of Denton Thursday, April 29 at 6pm to learn more about the upcoming street reconstruction project, the Denton Street Rehabilitation Capital Improvement Project (CIP). The Denton Street Rehabilitation CIP includes the reconstruction of 47 residential street sections throughout the City with a 30 or less Overall Condition Index (OCI) score from the 2012 and 2014 Bond Programs (a map will be provided during the virtual community meeting).

Parks and Recreation will host a Family Camp Out event to kick
off the summer season at South Lakes Park, June 5-6. The event begins at 3 p.m. and ends after breakfast the next morning at 8 a.m. Local sponsors will provide dinner and breakfast. Activities will include a tent decorating contest, night hike, fishing, sunrise yoga, s’mores, ghost stories, and more. There are 20 family camping spaces available, and tents are not provided. Each camping space is $60. Registration begins May 1

Parks Project Finder

A new mural to be painted on the exterior of the MLK Rec Center. Thanks to the generous support of Keep America Beautiful&#39;s Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor Community Grant program, Denton Parks and Recreation will be able to hire a skilled muralist to create a mural across two large sections of the MLK Rec Center&#39;s exterior facade. The project will be community-led from the start with input from the public informing both the theming and the artistic style of the work. On this page you can track project progress and find out when in-person and virtual meetings will take place to receive public input. Additionally, by using the tools at the bottom of the page you can ask staff questions about the project, or provide your own input directly to us.

MLK Community Mural Project

Located next to Water Works Parks at 2400 Long Rd., Denton, TX, the Denton Skate Park opened in 2004 as a pioneering facility featuring prefabricated ramps and skate elements. Over the years, community feedback through the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan has highlighted the need for a new skate park with standard concrete elements, situated closer to downtown. Staff have been actively seeking funding sources, including grants, to realize this vision. Stay tuned for updates on the project&#39;s progress.

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW163141451 BCX0">City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022. The plan identifies a future trail along the Hickory Creek Corridor. The trail is estimated to be roughly 15 miles long and will follow the Hickory Creek corridor. The trail&#39;s starting point is from Old Alton Bridge (Old Alton Rd.), and the endpoint is University St. (US-380). The path is proposed to go through both private and City land. Staff is working diligently to identify the areas needed within the private land and engage with the landowners in the pursuit of land dedication or attaining public access easements.Parks and Recreation will collaborate with the City Engineering/Transportation Department and Environmental Services and Sustainability staff throughout the creation of this plan. The proposed project will consist of public engagement, needs assessment, conceptual designs, construction documents, the probable cost for the development, and the ability to provide grant writing services. This information will become part of the master plan for constructing the linear trail. The trail includes items such as but is not limited to concrete trails, bridges, boardwalks, landscaping, and typical amenities.</div>

Hickory Creek Trail Master Plan

Located at 501 S Bradshaw St, Fred Moore Park is a neighborhood park with a range of amenities for visitors and local residents to enjoy. The park features various amenities such as:<ul><li>Park Furnishings such as benches, dog waste stations, picnic tables, grills, and trash receptacles</li><li>Playground</li><li>Pavilions &amp; Ampitheatre,</li><li>Basketball Court</li><li>Softball Field</li><li>Multi-Purpose Field</li><li>Home to the American Legion Hall Senior Center</li></ul>In 2023, Parks and Recreation (PARD) submitted an application for a grant for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. PARD was successfully awarded $230,000 for various improvements at Fred Moore Park which include:<ul><li>Addition of Pergola in the back patio area at the American Legion Hall Senior Center</li><li>Replacement of the pavilion north of the basketball court.</li><li>Addition of sidewalk north of the bridge to provide ADA accessibility and connectivity to the Softball fields.</li></ul>To stay up to date on this project&#39;s progress, select &quot;Follow Project&quot; on the right.

Fred Moore Park CDBG Improvements

In 2018, the City of Denton acquired a 6.5-acre parcel at 6414 Edwards Rd., located at the intersection of Swisher Road and Edwards Road, earmarked for a future park. The overarching vision for this property is to create a vibrant recreational space that caters specifically to the diverse needs and preferences of the local community.In December 2020, marking a significant milestone, the City of Denton took a decisive step forward by enlisting the expertise of a consultant to develop a comprehensive Master Plan for the Villages of Carmel Property. This marked the commencement of a collaborative process geared towards envisioning the park&#39;s potential and strategically shaping its future. Subsequently, from March to July 2021, the City of Denton, working hand-in-hand with the consultant, delved into an intensive phase of coordination and design. This inclusive process integrated public perspectives through multiple engagement forums, involving crucial stakeholders such as the City Council, Parks Board, Committee of Persons with Disabilities, internal staff, and the local community. How should we honor the Chairy Orchard? Share your thoughts!Like all Denton residents, City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department staff were saddened to hear about the closing of the Chairy Orchard. Parks and Recreation staff realized the importance of this Denton landmark and worked quickly to secure some of the most prominent elements of this art piece including the &ldquo;Very Big Chair,&rdquo; a sculptural chair archway, love lock display, and other miscellaneous chairs. We have those elements in safekeeping and are trying to determine how best to display these items for the public to enjoy. Chairy Orchard Project

Located at 327 South Wood Street, Carl G. Young Sr. Park is a delightful neighborhood park with a range of amenities for visitors and local residents to enjoy. The park boasts a playground, a basketball court, and park furnishings such as benches, picnic tables, grills, and receptacles.The park&#39;s splashpad, which is the result of a community-driven effort, is a standout feature. In 2014, voters approved the sale of $200,000 in General Obligation Bonds to finance the construction of a small/medium splashpad. The local community also rallied together to raise an additional $10,493.80 through grassroots efforts and an online crowdfunding platform. In 2017, Council approved the purchase and installation of splashpad equipment by Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds and Water Parks for Phase 1 of the project. During the construction process, there were further requests from the community for the installation of restroom facilities, and staff presented several options to Council. Eventually, the decision was made to take the project in-house, and the splashpad was opened to the public in May 2018. Looking to the future, the Denton Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan identifies the need to expand the existing splashpad, and both the community and council have expressed a desire to do so. Staff anticipates beginning Phase 2 of the project this year, and visitors can stay up-to-date on its progress by selecting &quot;Follow Project&quot; on the right. Carl Young Sr. Splash Pad Construction Project

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) owns a 389.49-acre developed parcel named North Lakes Park, located at 2001 W. Windsor Drive Denton, TX 76201. Recently, the City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022, which prioritizes the development of an inclusive playground within the City. In light of this, the Lily Cantu Playground - a current 2-5 &amp; 5-12 playground - has been identified as the ideal location for a brand-new destination all-inclusive park, which will attract visitors from across the region. This project will undergo a robust process of through a robust process of public engagement, focus groups, and board/commission feedback, ensuring that the final result is a playground that everyone can enjoy. The project is currently pursuing funding opportunities, and the current scope of work includes the probable cost estimation, needs assessment, conceptual designs, as well as the preparation of 30% construction documents, which will lay the groundwork for the project&#39;s eventual construction. These valuable pieces of information will be incorporated into the master plan for North Lakes Park&#39;s improvements, creating a unique all-inclusive playground that is set to become a regional attraction.Playgrounds are an essential component of child development, providing opportunities to improve physical, cognitive, sensory, and social skills. The new playground design will be &#39;barrier-free&#39; and feature areas of play with universal design features that cater to individuals of all abilities, including those with physical and mental disabilities. These may include rehabilitation equipment, nature-based activities, and garden/landscape experiences for children and adults of all abilities.With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, the new North Lakes Park Lily Cantu All-inclusive playground is set to become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the community, offering a safe and engaging space for everyone to enjoy.

Parks and Recreation is partnering with Denton Off-road Trails Association and Big Pig Racing Mission to construct a mountain bike trail in South Lakes Park. Preparation work for the trail site will begin this weekend, which will include volunteers assisting with the targeted removal of privet using hand tools. Previously, the Environmental Services and Sustainability Department worked with Parks and Recreation to develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for privet removal and habitat restoration on park property. The SOP focuses on pre-activity inspection, removal strategies, public education and involvement, restoration planning, and follow-up activities. South Lakes Park Mountain Bike Trail Development

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department owns an 18-acre community park and garden that is home to a playground, picnic tables and benches, a small fruit orchard, and a community garden. In December 2020, Council approved Pacheco Koch Consulting Engineers, Inc to serve as the consultants and will be developing a master plan and redesign for Bowling Green Park. From March to July 2021, the City of Denton and Pacheco Koch designed a final park rendering through public engagement forums with the City Council, Parks Board, Committee of Persons with Disabilities, internal staff, and the local community.On August 1, 2022, the Parks and Recreation Department submitted a grant application to Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) for the Local Park Grant for improvements at Bowling Green Park. This grant provides funding for 50% of the proposed construction.

Bowling Green Park Improvements Project

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department owns a 23.52-acre developed parcel named Denia Park, located at 1001 Parvin St., Denton, TX 76205. The park features a recently installed playground, four softball fields, batting cages, parking lots, futsal court, trail, three half basketball courts, a multi-purpose field, benches, picnic tables, and a small pavilion. City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022. The Master Plan provides an analysis of various parks, (includes Denia) and gives the department guidance in addressing short and long-term goals as funding allows. This agreement is vital in future planning for Parks and Recreation and its mission to serve and meet the community&#39;s needs.The scope of the project improvements will consist of public engagement, design, and construction. The items currently identified as improvements include but are not limited to the following: Loop trail to increase access and connectivity on east &amp; to soccer field, irrigation to improve existing issues and turf quality, softball field improvements for safety, and landscaping improvements.Parks and Recreation will schedule public meetings later this spring. Denia Park Improvements Project

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department manages two senior centers; American Legion Hall Senior Center and the Denton Senior Center. The City of Denton, adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan (PRTSMP) in Spring 2022. The PRTSMP identifies several improvements and significant investments needed for the Active Adult 50+ division. The Parks and Recreation Department is soliciting and gathering feedback on the communities needs, wants, and desires for a future center.

Active Adult Center Vision Plan

The City of Denton is embarking on a project to memorialize Quakertown - a largely African American community that existed and thrived for almost five decades in the late 19th and early 20th century before being displaced to make room for Quakertown Park.Parks and Recreation will conduct a series of public engagement meetings to seek feedback on options for temporary memorialization during this centennial moment honoring Quakertown (removal occurred between 1921 and 1923).The Denton Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with multiple City departments and community members with relevant insight and expertise, are joining to honor the community of Quakertown including its history, legacy, residents, and their descendants. Quakertown Memorial Project

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department manages three outdoor aquatic facilities: the Water Works Park (WWP), Civic Center Pool (CCP), and the Carl Gene Young Sr. Sprayground. The City also shares the Denton Natatorium with the Denton Independent School District (DISD). The Aquatics division operates year-round to support recreational, competitional, and leisure swimming opportunities for the community. The City of Denton, adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan (PRTSMP) in Spring 2022. The PRTSMP identifies several improvements and significant investments needed for the Aquatics division. This project will consist of additional public engagement, needs assessment, conceptual designs, probable cost for the improvements, and several other items culminating to an Aquatics Master Plan that will guide the Aquatics division for the next 10 years.

Aquatics Master Plan

Ligustrum sinense, also referred to as Chinese privet, is an evergreen ornamental shrub or small tree in the Oleaceae (olive) family that grows 6 to 13 feet tall. It has become an invasive weed in the southeastern US that can tolerate a wide range of conditions. Plants form dense thickets and produce toxic berries, invading fields, fencerows, roadsides, forest understories, and riparian sites. The shrub can shade out and exclude native understory species and prevent natural regeneration of native trees. Overall, privet causes notable reductions of ecological quality and recreational use of open spaces and natural habitats.Targeted privet removal is necessary to improve the health of natural areas and increase the use and enjoyment of public land. Environmental Services and Parks and Recreation Departments have developed procedures for targeted removal that promotes long-term solutions to eliminate this plant and restore the characteristics and functions of public open space and habitat on public land.This site will be used as an educational platform, provide updates for the Denton community, and inform on the efforts the City of Denton is doing to restore the habitats throughout the city.

Parks For The Future

City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022. The plan identifies a future trail along the Pecan Creek Corridor. The trail length is estimated to be between eight to ten miles. The trail&#39;s starting point is from the DCTA Trail/Fred Moore Park, with the endpoint being at Lewisville Lake. The path is proposed to go through both private and City land. Staff is working diligently to identify the areas needed within the private land and engage with the landowners in the pursuit of land dedication or attaining public access easements. Parks and Recreation will collaborate with the Bike/Ped/ADA Coordinator and Environmental Services and Sustainability staff throughout the creation of this plan. The proposed project will consist of public engagement, needs assessment, conceptual designs, construction documents, the probable cost for the development, and the ability to provide grant writing services. This information will become part of the master plan for constructing the linear trail. The trail includes items such as but is not limited to concrete trails, bridges, boardwalks, landscaping, and typical amenities.

Pecan Creek Trail Master Plan

The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department owns an 9.62-acre developed parcel named Briercliff Park, located at 3200 State School Road Denton, TX 76201. The proposed project will consist of public engagement, needs assessment, conceptual designs, construction documents, probable cost for the development, and grant writing. This information will become part of the master plan for improvements for the park, which could include items such as, but not limited to a loop trail, restroom facility, sprayground, expansion of parking, landscaping, and typical park amenities.
