Creating your own landscape can seem overwhelming but breaking it down into manageable steps makes it approachable and even enjoyable. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transform your yard:

Step 1: Plan Your Vision

Define Your Goals: Decide what you want to achieve with your landscape. Is it for relaxation, entertaining, or gardening?

Assess Your Yard: Take note of the sun and shade patterns, existing plants, and the overall layout of your yard. You can do this yourself by creating a sun map of your property. Check out the guide on how to sun map on the right.

Create a Sketch: Draw a basic plan of your yard, including any existing features like house, garage, AC unit, sidewalks, etc. Sketch out where you want to add new elements. For ideas on a design check out Landscape Designs on the right.

Step 2: Choose Your Plants and Materials

Select Plants: Choose plants that thrive in your climate and soil type. Consider a mix of trees, shrubs, flowers, and ground cover. Check out the North Texas Native and Adapted Plant list on the right.

Pick Materials: Decide on the materials you'll need, such as mulch, edging.

Step 3: Prepare the Site

Clear the Area: Remove existing turfgrass, check out How to Kill Grass Guide on the Right, weeds, rocks, or debris from the area you plan to landscape.

Improve the Soil: Add compost or other soil amendments to improve the quality and drainage of the soil.

Step 4: Plant Your Garden

Arrange Plants: Lay out your plants according to your sketch before planting to ensure proper spacing.

Dig Holes: Dig holes that are twice as wide and just as deep as the plant's root ball.

Plant and Water: Place the plants in the holes, fill with soil, and water thoroughly.

Step 5: Mulch and Maintain

Apply Mulch: Spread a layer of mulch around your plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Water Regularly: Keep your plants hydrated, especially during the first few weeks.

Maintain: Prune, weed, and fertilize as needed to keep your landscape looking its best.

Step 6: Enjoy Your New Landscape!

Add Personal Touches: Decorate with garden ornaments, lighting, or outdoor furniture to make the space your own.

Relax and Enjoy: Take time to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of your new landscaped area.

Determine Project Cost: Some research may be required to look up the current price of plants and materials of your choosing. If you are using a rebate, remember you will need to pay for the total project up front. After project completion and submission of your rebate application then that amount will be distributed.
