Safe Routes to Schools and Sycamore Mixed-Use Path Pedestrian & Bike Improvements Project
In an effort to see savings through economies of scale, TxDOT authorized the city to combine all three grant funded pedestrian improvement projects into one singular project for bidding and construction purposes. The project, SRTS and Sycamore Mixed-Use Path Bike & Pedestrian Improvements project is expected to begin construction in May 2025. City Council authorized the construction contract in February 2025, upon receiving approval from TxDOT.
This project is partially funded by North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) and Transportation Alternative Set Aside (TASA) grant funds, managed by TxDOT with additional grant funds from the DCTA Transportation Reinvestment Program (TRiP). Through these partnerships with TxDOT, NCTCOG and DCTA, the City is able to provide this major east-west multi-use connector along Sycamore as well as improved safety and connectivity for several city elementary schools.
A virtual community meeting will be held prior to the start of the construction at which time the contractor will share their schedule including where they plan to begin work and when we can expect construction in certain areas. If you live in these areas, look for yard signs with a QR Code which will link you to the meeting invite where you can register to attend. You can also check back on this page for the invite as well.
Sycamore Sidepath (A-Train to UNT)
The Sycamore Mixed-Use Path Project provides a 10-foot sidepath from Bell Avenue to the UNT Campus area at Welch Street.
The Sidepath will be on the north side of Sycamore Street and includes pedestrian signal upgrades at existing traffic signalised intersections. A 5-foot bike lane on each side of Welch Street will also be installed, connecting to the existing bike lanes near Eagle and extending to Hickory Street.
The remaining segment of the mixed-use path between Bell and the A-Train Station will be installed with the Downtown UPRR Quiet Zone project anticipated to begin construction in Q1 2026.
The below image is a section of the 10-foot sidepath installed by the developer on Sycamore and is not a depiction related to the SRTS segments.
