The following questions were asked during last Thursday's Community Meeting:

    1. There is on the south bank near near the basketball court an area which provides easy access to the cree with almost a beach like feel. Will this area be impacted? The younger ones love it. This area will not be impacted by the construction.
    2. Will a bioswale be part of the project? I was considered but both Drainage and Watershed decided that the location was not great and the potential benefits did not justify the cost. Also it would have required a no-mow area with tall grass near the creek which may have attracted undesirable wild life to the park/trail area.
    3. Will the trees along the south bank be preserved? Only three trees will be removed during the construction. One has a exposed root system that is in need of removal and two smaller trees that are located within the 75 degree bend of the creek.

    4. Will the stone work use mortar or are they stacked and rely on gravity and fit? Will flora be able to root and grow? The stone work will be benched like stairs, set on concrete leveling pads, and doweled into the leveling pads and each other. Mortar will be used to fill in the dowel holes and in areas were the storm water pipe discharges into the creek.

    5. The erosion issue extends to Windsor outside of the project area, will this be addressed? The area of Cooper Creek near Windsor is not park of this project but I will forward the concern to our Senior Drainage Engineer.

    6. Will the creek bottom continue to be natural/muddy in the modified area? The are within the project area will be restored to the natural way it was before the construction.

    7. Please do include sample elevations of the stonebank? Please see the following pictures of sample wall heights.

Residents also requested example pictures of the Lueders Stone, these are only examples of Lueders stone but the actual appearance of the stone after installation may vary.

On May 4, a community meeting was held regarding the proposed re-construction of a section of Cooper Creek that runs through Avondale Park. In 2022, a construction fence was installed along the creek as recent erosion has caused significant deterioration of the southern side of the creek. Objectives of the project is stable and repair the channel erosion, improve safety of park patrons, enhance the aesthetics of the property, provide a low maintenance option and consider associate construction costs.

Last fall, the City of Denton hired Pacheco Koch to serve as the project consultant to help develop options the mitigate the erosion impacting the park. During the meeting city staff presented three options for consideration including concrete-lined slope, green gabions and stone lueders. Staff's recommendation of utilizing the stone lueders option matched the feedback provided by the community. While it was the most expensive option, it was also the most aesthetically pleasing construction option identified for the park. The lueders provide for a semi-permanent cure while also se functionally allowing park users to traverse down the stones to the water's edge. Adding landscape to the design will also soften the harshness of the stones.

Pacheco Koch will be moving forward with the design of construction documents to prepare for project bidding. Funding has been requested in FY2023-2024 to be able to support the projected $1.1M in construction costs (not including landscaping and irrigation).
