City Sidewalk Improvement Projects
The intent of this page is to provide the most up to date information on City sidewalk installation projects through 2025. The sidewalks may be included in a City Capital Improvement Street Project or they may be stand alone sidewalk projects. These projects will improve sidewalk connectivity as well as increase pedestrian and vehicular safety. The City also participates in several state and federal grant funding programs such as Safe Routes to Schools (STRS), Transportation Alternatives Set Aside (TA), Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvements (CMAQ) and the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) Transportation Reinvestment Program (TRiP). The segments listed below are projects currently planned for construction through 2025.
PROVIDING YOU THE MOST ACCURATE INFORMATION POSSIBLE IS OUR GOAL
The below projects are not a comprehensive list of City planned sidewalks, but rather a list of segments planned to be installed through year 2025 with little likelihood of change. A map with the below listed segments can also be found here: https://www.discussdenton.com/13079/widgets/38897/documents/24358
As Denton continues to grow and develop, priority areas may change. Some sidewalk segments planned by the City may be planned and installed by private development projects, allowing the City to apply those funds to other sidewalk projects. By keeping the list to 2025, staff is providing residents with the most accurate information to date.
Staff is strategically planning for new sidewalks where they will serve the greatest needs in the community by reviewing data that indicates where pedestrian activity will be highest. The City's Pedestrian Potential Index (PPI) criteria listed below allows for the ranking of segments based on their true potential for pedestrian use and ensures the City's Sidewalk Workplan is prioritized by factual data.

DEVELOPMENT OF A CITY SIDEWALK WORKPLAN
In November 2019, voters approved $12M in funding for the installation of new sidewalks in the community. In an effort to take a data driven approach to spending these funds, the City developed a Sidewalk Workplan that was presented to various committees in November 2021.
Some of the benefits of the sidewalk workplan are as follows:
- Data-driven prioritization system for determining which segments will be constructed
- Includes sidewalk segments planned for as part of roadway reconstruction projects when possible to reduce disruption to residents and capitalize on economies of scale
- Maximizes the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)Transition Plan sidewalk accessibility data
- Allows for advanced planning with other departments, including Development Services and the assessment of areas that may be constructed by private developers
FUN FACTS
TREES
The City is full of beautiful, mature trees. It is staff's goal to design city sidewalk segments around these large trees whenever possible. Not only does this preserve trees, it also helps keep neighborly relations with residents.
HEALTH
Since residents of neighborhoods with sidewalks are more likely to walk, they tend to have lower rates of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other health issues related to sedentary lifestyles. Also, children who walk to school have been shown to have better concentration.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Sidewalk (American English) - A usually paved walk for pedestrians at the side of a street
Pavement (British, Australian, Irish, Indian and New Zealand English) - Refers to the paved area of the road that’s designed exclusively for pedestrians.

EFFORTS IN CIVIC BETTERMENT
In 1913, the Denton City Federation of Women's Clubs was organized with the object of "securing for Denton the benefits to be derived from cooperation in all lines of civic betterment, especially in the matter of cleanliness, sanitation and beauty." In that first year the Federation had the cooperation of all City officials, County Commissioners, the Chamber of Commerce, school board, the Elks, newspapers, merchants and nearly all of the citizens to conduct a clean up campaign. A Committee of women inspected every city street, sidewalk, alley, public building, storehouse and public stairway. They instituted "soap and water days" to scrub sidewalks, stairways and windows and days set apart for collecting rubbish and unsightly objects including weeds from streets and yards. They also promoted new sidewalks and drinking fountains at each ward school and the high school.

First off, I apologize for the delayed response. There was an issue with Discuss Denton emailing the notification that a question had been posed that has just been corrected.
The project including Sycamore Sidepath and the Safe Routes to Schools connections; Nette Shultz, Pecan Creek, Ginnings & Alexander Elementary Schools (see limits under grant funded projects on the main page) just received approval from TxDOT to award for construction. He expect award of the project to be on council for approval on January 17, 2025 with construction to begin in February. A virtual community meeting will be held prior to the start of the construction at which time the contractor will share their schedule including where they plan to begin and when we can expect construction in certain areas. If you live in these areas, look for yard signs with a QR Code which will link you to the meeting invite where you can register to attend. You can also check back on this page for the invite as well.

I am not aware of any sidewalk related work taking place in your area. It could be another utility that is doing locates and marking them. It is best to reach out to Patrick Nunley, our Utility Coordinator. He will be able to see if any utilities have requested a permit to work in the City's Right-of-Way. He can be reached at Patrick.Nunley@cityofdenton.com.

Peggy on Emerson asked about 1 year agoHi Peggy,
At this time, the project limits do not go beyond Brookfield. We did construct the sidepath on Hanover (Avondale Park) to provide that connectivity around the school once the sidewalk on Emerson is complete. Should future Safe Routes to Schools or other funds become available, this is certainly a stretch the city could consider.

Share Dear Robin, I made a request for a sidewalk, but the case was closed and I was referred to this website. Is it possible to add new sidewalk projects to the existing City Sidewalk Improvement Projects? West Congress Street, between Malone and Bryan Street, does not have a sidewalk. There are at least four school-age or younger children living here. The cars from Malone make sharp turns onto Congress (there is no stop sign), making the street dangerous for children. Schools are nearby and within walking distance but we do not have a safe sidewalk. Is there any way that sidewalk construction could be expanded to this part of West Congress Street? If you are the wrong person to contact about this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Vojin asked about 1 year agoVojin, It looks like this section of Congress is scheduled for full depth repair mid to late 2025. If the City has enough right-of-way, sidewalks will be included with the reconstruction project. It has become the city's holistic approach in an effort to reduce interruptions to neighborhoods. The Project Manager for that project is Scott Fettig. You can reach out to him at scott.fettig@cityofdenton.com to learn if the design team was able to fit sidewalks into the street reconstruction plan.
Thanks,

Kelly Smith asked about 1 year agoHi Kelly, Thank you for reaching out.
Existing sidewalks with issues like this are considered maintenance issues and are handled by our streets department.
I have forwarded to them this information and they are looking into it. You are welcome to email daniel.kramer@cityofdenton.com for an update as I did not have any contact info for you to share with Danny.
for any future existing sidewalk issues like these, you are welcome to use our app, Engage Denton: The official citizen application for Denton, TX. (citysourced.com). This app will direct the issue to the appropriate department on entry.
thanks again,

ChristianCarp asked about 3 years agoHello Mr. Carp,
This is a great question. In most cases, the City right-of-way goes several feet behind the street curb, providing enough space to construct a 4 to 5 foot sidewalk. If the owner has constructed a stone path in that city right of way, it may be removed to ensure the new sidewalk can be installed in compliance with ADA regulations.
If the the city needs to acquire the right of way to construct the sidewalk from the owner, our real estate department acquires appraisals for the needed right of way and offers are made based on those appraisals and the improvements upon them.
I hope that makes sense.
Please feel free to email me at robin.davis@cityofdenton.com if you have additional questions.
Thank you,

Peggy on Emerson asked about 3 years agoHello Peggy,
We anticipate final design completion in January 2023. This includes TxDOT and NCTCOG review time at each design submittal required by the the Safe Routes to Schools grant program.
We also anticipate construction to begin in early Q3 2023. As this construction project will include 4 school campus areas, the contractor will submit their construction schedule that we will then share with each affected campus and area neighborhoods to ensure everyone is aware of the timeline.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly at robin.davis@cityofdenton.com.
