What is a Comprehensive Plan?

The City of Denton’s Comprehensive Plan is an official planning policy document designed to serve as the jurisdiction’s “local constitution” or “blueprint” for future growth.

The following are the most critical characteristics of a comprehensive plan:

◆ Generalized: a comprehensive plan provides overall guidance that can be used to direct future land use and resource decisions.

◆ Broad scope: a comprehensive plan addresses a broad scope of topics, including land use, housing, mobility, public services, recreation, and natural and cultural resources.

◆ Long-range: a comprehensive plan provides long-range guidance (20 years or longer) on how a vision for a community can be reached.

Comprehensive Plans are the foundation for all planning, public infrastructure, and community development efforts. Strategies for economic development, housing, recreation, city beautification, infrastructure and more are built upon the long-range vision, goals and policies of the Comprehensive Plan.
