Background

The current Denton Downtown Master Plan was adopted in 2002. Downtown has changed and grown quite a bit since then, and will continue to grow in the future.

The main purpose of the update is to:

  1. Confirm if the vision and goals for Downtown are still relevant today and for the near future;
  2. Evaluate if the Downtown boundary should be expanded in size to maximize future opportunities;
  3. Set clear policy direction and supporting implementation strategies that will continue the economic growth of Downtown, enhance pedestrian experience, and preserve the character of the Downtown; and
  4. Identify additional open space, increase housing choices, enhance mobility connectivity and balance development while protecting existing neighborhoods and historic resources.

The Design Downtown Denton plan will help guide decisions in Downtown Denton over the next 20 years. The updated plan will address key downtown opportunities and challenges, which include but not limited to parking, mobility, housing, open space, historic preservation, drainage, infrastructure, and other public service needs.

The Planning Department will kick off Design Downtown Denton in July! We will need input from community stakeholders – like you!

Community Stakeholder Input is key!

As a stakeholder in Downtown, we want to hear from you – the updated plan should reflect the community’s priorities. We want to make sure that we hear from a wide range of voices that covers the full spectrum of people, businesses, and organizations who live, work, eat, play, and serve in the Downtown area.

As we get started with the update, our request to you:

  • Stay engaged
  • Provide us with the best contact person for your business/church/organization – who we can contact with email updates during the Design Downtown Denton process?
  • Tell us about other key Downtown stakeholders – people, businesses, organizations - particularly those that we might not immediately think of
  • If you are a member of an organization, association or interest group that focus on Downtown – we would like to present at you next meeting

Thank you in advance for your participation and support in helping us plan for the future of Downtown!

    On July 19, 2023, the project team (staff and consultant team) kicked off the project with a Site Visit of Downtown in the morning. After the Site Visit, the project team hosted a kickoff meeting with key staff members representing various City departments. The kickoff meeting included a project overview presentation to inform attendees the purpose, scope and schedule of the project. Attendees then participated in a vision setting exercise that required participants to use their phone to answer questions - with the results being presented live for everyone to see. A summary of the Site Visit and vision setting exercise is being prepared by the consultant team and will be shared with the staff at a later date. Later in the afternoon, the consultant team began a series of stakeholder interviews, followed by conducting fieldwork and door-to-door business owner surveys.

    On July 20, 2023, the consultant team continued their stakeholder interviews, fieldwork and door-to-door business owner surveys. In the afternoon, the project team held a recap meeting to discuss what heard and observed so far. In the evening, the staff led a walking tour around the Downtown. The intent was to share with the consultant teams a personal tour of areas within Downtown from a pedestrian perspective. Key members of the business community, residents, and Police Officers joined in the walking tour.

    On July 21, 2023, the consultant team conducted more stakeholder interviews in the morning before concluding their visit to Denton.

    Following the consultant's visit, several team management meetings have been held and data collection is currently in progress.
