In the Beginning ...

Hickory Creek Interceptor (HCI) Capital Improvement Project Program is a multi-phased sanitary sewer project. The existing interceptor was installed in the 1980s. The new construction will add capacity and improve wastewater services to accommodate future growth projected to occur in the Hickory Creek Basin.

Hickory Creek Interceptor Phase 1&2 Project Status

HCI 1 & 2 includes the replacement of approximately 13,000 linear feet (2.46 miles) of 36, 42, 48 and 54-inch sewer mains along Hickory Creek from Fort Worth Drive (US 377) to I-35W. Construction is ongoing and the project is expected to be complete the first of the new year (2023)

Hickory Creek Interceptor Phase 3 Project Status

HCI 3 will continue from HCI 1&2 to the north extending the planned improvements to upgrade the Hickory Creek Interceptor Corridor. Installation of approximately 9,700 LF of 30-inch sewer line with an improved alignment to replace the existing 12-inch sewer main and the rehabilitation of an existing 12-inch sewer line that crosses the creek. Utilities, THC, and TxDOT are clear.

The project has started advertising process. Staff evaluated the scope of the project and recommended using CSP (Competitive Sealed Proposal) instead of IFB (Invitation For Bid or “low bid”). CSP will allow staff to consider the contractor's staff, project workload, and history within our highly competitive market without price being the sole consideration.

It's March - While we all lose an hour for the time change, celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and respond to the threats of March Showers, Wilson Contractor Services is continuing to make great progress! The bores and tunnels are complete and Wilson Contractor Services is continuing to lay pipe. And if the weather is favorable - they will continue to remain ahead of schedule.

Welcome to the Hickory Creek Interceptor Phase 3 (HCI 3) project update. HCI 3 is a sanitary sewer interceptor that will replace approximately 9,700 LF (1.8 mi) of 30-inch sewer line from the northern termination of HCI 1&2 near IH 35 and continue north. It will also replace an existing 12-inch sewer main and rehabilitate an existing 12-inch creek crossing. The project was designed by the City's Engineering Department and the construction contract was awarded to Wilson Contractor Services, a local Denton contractor! The Notice to Proceed was issued Summer 2023 and is expected to be complete in Fall 2024. The contractor is currently securing the long-lead materials and once final delivery is made, clearing/grading, and installation will be ready.

Hickory Creek Interceptor Phases 1&2 have been in operation and the key, as seen below, has literally been handed over to the City! The project was a success with Mountain Cascade of Texas performing the work, the City of Denton Utilities Department being in close contact and always available to help with unforeseen field issues, and the great teamwork of the City of Denton's Public Works Inspectors & Project Managers. Meanwhile, Hickory Creek Interceptor Phase 3 has been issued the Notice to Proceed with construction starting June 20, 2023, so look for Wilson Contractor Services to begin working in the area very soon!

The Easter Bunny was hiding eggs and you might be wondering - did all the contractors go in hiding, too? It's so quiet out here! Are they done?

The HCI 1&2 sewer line is in service but the project is not what we call "CLOSED OUT." There's a little bit of pavement repair and vegetation needed so you still may see Mountain Cascade working in the area as they wrap up the final touches.

The HCI 3 construction has not yet started construction. Behind-the-scenes office work is being coordinated such as getting the material approved and ordered. We anticipate Wilson Contractor Services will start construction around JUNE 1, 2023. Construction is expected to take 400 calendar days (weather dependent). For more information - join the Virtual Community Meeting that is scheduled for Thursday 4/20/23 at 6:00 pm.

January 2023 accomplishment included the substantial completion of HCI 1&2. The remaining items include some pavement and vegetation restoration. For HCI 3, City of Denton Council awarded the Construction Contract to Wilson Contractor Services (Denton). February is starting icy and very cold but hey, it's Texas we'll warm up for Valentine's because Denton Loves Construction! Planned February tasks include wrapping up final paperwork to execute the contracts, setting a Public Meeting date, setting a Pre-Construction Meeting date. The Team will also be working to identify a Notice-to-Proceed (NTP) date and from that date, the project is anticipated to last 400 days (13 months) pending no issues (such as weather or unforeseen conflicts).
