Strategic Foresight Workshop
Why Strategic Foresight?
As all of us have seen, our present does not look anything like our past, and in our fast-changing world our future will surely not resemble the present. So why should we base an area’s future vision and plan simply on projecting the past and present trends? Therefore, we need to conduct a strategic foresight workshop - a process that takes a look at the future trends in technology, society, the economy, the environment, and politics and asks, “What is this area’s future likely going to look like twenty (or thirty) years from now?” It imagines several, possible future scenarios and then asks,” Are we ready for any of these?”
How will the Workshop be conducted?
- Participants will review and develop the top trends they believe are relevant to the area’s future
- Using the outcome from this trend analysis exercise, participants will then work together to develop four different future scenarios
- Following the scenario building exercise, participants will identify a list of common themes form the scenarios
- Using these common themes, participants will then develop a vision statement for the future of the Northeast Denton area
(Note: throughout the project we have included multiple public feedback opportunities to validate and build consensus for the vision statement.)
Who is invited?
This one-day workshop will include a diverse group of 40-60 stakeholders that are a representative sample across geography, organizations, and demographics (age, race, gender, etc.). The invitations are meant to ensure that there are sufficient participants with broad range of experiences to ensure a meaningful dialogue. City staff worked with the consultant team to identify stakeholders that include City Council members, Planning and Zoning Commissioners, Denton County representatives, Northeast Denton Area Plan Steering Committee and Ambassador members, DISD representatives, landowners, residents, business owners and university and high school faculty and students.
