The naming policy applies to a nomination to name a City building, facility, land, or any portion thereof. Naming, whether after an individual, foundation, or organization will be on a case-by-case basis and assessed for potential conflict of interest and alignment with the City's mission and values. The final decision for naming a City building, facility, land, or any portion thereof shall rest with the City Council.

The City Council may initiate the naming of any building, facility, land, or any portion thereof at its discretion and may apply the guidelines within the policy. The City Council may choose to waive any part of these guidelines by three-fourths vote of the entire City Council. Any amendments to this policy require only a simple Council majority vote. These policy guidelines do not address the naming of streets, fire stations, or police stations, or naming based on advertising.

Residents have the opportunity to consider each naming application and to provide their feedback on the applications under consideration. Parks and Recreation will host a virtual public meeting on June 1, via Zoom.

    Parks and Recreation staff held a virtual meeting on Thursday, January 9 to receive public input the following naming applications: 

    • Consider changing the name of Denton Civic Center to Quakertown Civic Center
    • Consider naming the Day Labor Site at 301 Fort Worth Drive in honor of Emilio "Popo" Gonzalez, a long-time advocate for Denton's Hispanic Community and one of the founders of Familias Unidas, which would become Denton's chapter of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens).
    • Consider changing the name of the Juneteenth Softball tournament to commemorate a long-serving umpire who recently passed away.

    City of Denton Parks and Recreation will be holding a virtual public meeting on Thursday, January 9 at 6:00 PM to accept public input regarding three recently received naming applications for parks facilities. These applications seek to rename the Civic Center, Juneteenth Classic Baseball Tournament, and Denton Day Labor Site, respectively.     Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a virtual public meeting for the Park and Trail Naming Requests. Please join for an opportunity to learn about and view parks and trails naming applications. Residents will have the opportunity to consider each naming application and to provide their feedback on the various parks and trails naming applications currently under consideration.

    This meeting is scheduled to take place on June 1, 2022, at 6:00 p.m.

    How to Join the Meeting:

    Residents are encouraged to sign up for the virtual meeting at least 24-hours in advance to receive the meeting link. The City will provide select accommodations, such as sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired if requested at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled meeting. Please email parksnrec@cityofdenton.com so that accommodation requests can be reviewed and processed.
