Parks and Recreation is partnering with Denton Off-road Trails Association and Big Pig Racing Mission to construct a mountain bike trail in South Lakes Park. Preparation work for the trail site will begin this weekend, which will include volunteers assisting with the targeted removal of privet using hand tools. Previously, the Environmental Services and Sustainability Department worked with Parks and Recreation to develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for privet removal and habitat restoration on park property. The SOP focuses on pre-activity inspection, removal strategies, public education and involvement, restoration planning, and follow-up activities. For more information on how to volunteer visit the volunteer event page (link). In addition, staff have created a Discuss Denton page dedicated to privet removal communications.

The creation of the trail will be conducted by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering please register here: Mountain Bike Trail Workdays | City of Denton Parks and Recreation (galaxydigital.com)

    • Add topsoil to berms
    • Cut a few new re-routes to improve flow

    We will have tools on hand but if you have extra bring them just in case:

    • McLeods, Mattocks, Shovels (spade and flat)
    • Loppers
    • 5 Gallon buckets

    * Important *

    The property has mesquite, honey locust, and the rouge Bradford pear. All three have nasty thorns, but the Bradford pear is satan in tree form, seriously. The thorns are strong enough to penetrate leather gloves.

    ***Recording volunteer hours is very important for the city. This helps them secure grant money. More money equals more cool projects. The city has set up a tracking system along with signing an e-waiver. It's important that you sign the waiver before your work begins.

    As the summer heat settled into North Texas, the volunteer construction on the trail took a pause for the summer. On August 20, a large group of UNT volunteers helped work on the new trail for a few hours. This was a "Welcome Back to School" project as a way for the students to give back to the community and kick off the new school year. Thank you students and welcome back! Go Mean Green!
