Mayhill Road

The Mayhill Project is making excellent progress and we want to give everyone Advance Notice that Traffic Patterns will be changing EARLY MAY. The new traffic will be "flip flopped" on Colorado Blvd and lanes will be more restricted on Mayhill Road by Edwards Road and the rail.

BIGGEST IMPACT - BUSINESS ACCESS - For the 3 businesses shown in the picture below - there will be only ONE driveway open. You will only be able to turn Right-in and Right-Out of that driveway. YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS to the businesses if you come from the west (MEDPARK Drive or BRINKER Road). You must use Mayhill Road to access these businesses. You can come up Mayhill from the south (IH 35) or you can come down from the North (Spencer Road & the Landfill) or from the east (Edwards Road). Please plan ahead!

BIGGEST IMPACT - DEDICATED LANES

Look for and be prepared for DEDICATED lanes at the intersection of Edwards/Mayhill/DCTA Rail Crossing. We will start channeling specific lanes BEFORE the Rail and THRU the Rail. You will need to pick your lane and follow it thru.

NEVER STOP ON TRAIN TRACKS!

Friendly Reminder - Never Stop on Train Tracks. Do not proceed over the train tracks until you have a safe room to CLEAR the tracks. If you find you are in the wrong lane, stay in your lane and follow the signs until you can safely make corrections to your route.

Mayhill Road, Bridge, and Regional Detention is making progress. Recent focus has been on the bridge features such as sidewalks, safety rail. Work on Colorado Boulevard continues. You should also be seeing in the distance new Street Lighting and new Traffic Signals where New Mayhill will tie into "Old" Mayhill Road. And speaking of Old Mayhill Road - on May 21, 2024, the City hosted a Community Meeting (video is linked to this site) discussing the name change of Mayhill Road to Edwards Road for the section north of DCTA Train Tracks and connecting to "New Mayhill". Meanwhile, I hope you are having a Good Friday and a plan to have Happy Easter Weekend.

As many of you have been observing - Mayhill Road is being realigned with a new bridge over the DCTA/DART railroad and it will a 4-lane divided road to match the existing Phase 1 Section to the north and the section to the south.

The New Road Alignment needs to be called Mayhill Road. That means the OLD section will need a new name. There are unlimited options what to name the old section. However, one name made a lot of sense - Edwards Road! Edwards Road currently ties into Mayhill Road (at the DCTA Railroad) and when the New Mayhill Road is open, existing Edwards Road will simply extend to the north and tie into the NEW Mayhill Road at a new signalized intersection. Below is a picture of the section of Mayhill Road that will require Renaming (see the yellow line) as it connects to the existing Edwards Road.

Fellow Travelers - It's TIME to share the inevitable news that the Mayhill Road/Bridge Project will soon be impact to traffic at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Mayhill Road. It's something we simply cannot avoid because the entire intersection needs to be reconstructed. There is no easy way to fix the intersection without closing lanes. • GIVE YOURSELF MORE TIME! Please start giving yourself more time to get to work, to home, to your destinations.
• EXPECT DIFFERENT LANES CLOSING - Don't Assume - Watch Traffic Signs

WHAT WE ARE DOING TO EASE THE PAIN

• We are giving advance notice. Watch for Message Boards. Visit this Site.
• We are PRIORITIZING SAFETY and accommodating access and mobility.
• We will use the fastest means and methods to get done quickly.
• We will NOT shut down the entire intersection at one time. Mobility is important to the city.
• NO DETOURS. This is a regionally-significant intersection and there are no "parallel" routes that serve all users. We will not force traffic on a detour that goes away from their destination. We are asking you to find alternate routes that serve your needs.

WE GET IT!! WE FEEL THE PAIN, TOO!

• TRAFFIC SHOWS NO FAVORTISM - The Mayhill Construction Team works at Mayhill Ground Zero - We are stuck in the same traffic you are!! We have NO alternate route!
• City & County officials know this is not going to be pleasant - they live and drive thru this area, too!
• PLUS - Our friends, our family, our neighbors, our coworkers, our bosses all know "WE MADE THEM LATE"

Happy New Year!! Mayhill Road is making fantastic progress since the last update. The majority of the new Mayhill Road pavement has been constructed and the bridge deck (the driving surface) is ready to be poured this month. Other items being worked on include waterline relocation and flushing, drainage work on storm pipes, culverts, and rip rap.

WOW - Have seen the bridge structure growing over night? It's making amazing progress. YES - traffic is horrible - I drive this area, too! And I want to share some information.

Q) WHY ARE THE LANES CLOSED AND THERE'S NO WORK BEING DONE???

A) The lanes are closed for night work on the bridge. The southbound THROUGH Lane by the hospital is closed to allow a staging area for bridge beam delivery. You've likely seen this done on highway projects. The turn lanes that are closed are to prevent two lanes merging into one lane.

A) This is a Temporary Traffic Control. Setting up/tearing down the lane closures every day is not advantageous and can actually cause problems for high traffic areas by creating unpredictable traffic patterns and increasing confusion/delays and higher risks

Q) WHY DOES THE WORK HAVE TO BE AT NIGHT OR SUNDAYS???

A) Night work increases safety and convenience for the Katy Trail users and for all of the traffic in the area.

A) Night work allows the DCTA train to keep its schedule.

A) Traffic needs to be intermittently STOPPED to allow beam delivery trucks to enter/exit the site and requires flaggers. There is significantly less traffic at night (10pm to 4am). If the work was scheduled during the day, the intermittent traffic stops would cause FURTHER delays as well as increase driver confusion, traffic delays, safety/operation risks for workers and drivers.

Q) WHEN WILL ALL OF THIS BE OVER?

A) The bridge beam work is expected to be complete by November (that date is always subject to change if there's bad weather or unforeseen complications). So far, the Mayhill Phase 2 contractor is making great progress and staying on schedule. Once they are complete with the work on the southside of DCTA/Katy Trail, the lane closures at Colorado Blvd. and Mayhill Rd. will be removed.

Q) WHAT's NEXT? - Northside!

A) The purpose of the bridge is to span over Mayhill DCTA Rail and Katy Trail to eliminate vehicle-train and vehicle-pedestrian/bicycle crossings. All of the current beams are being set from the DCTA Rail south towards IH 35. Once the south side is complete, the crane and equipment will need to move to the north side of the DCTA Rail.

A) There are no lane closures planned for the work on the northside. All beam deliveries are expected to come from Mayhill Road from the north and they will enter the site.

WHERE - See Map below - There will be Three (3) Construction Access Points (see Map). There will be Three (3) Lane Closures. 1) One of the two Southbound Thru Lanes on Mayhill Road from Colorado Boulevard to IH 35, 2) One of the two Westbound Left-Turn Lanes on Mayhill Road at Colorado Boulevard, 3) One of the two Eastbound Right -Turn Lanes on Mayhill Road at Colorado Boulevard.

WHEN - The proposed lane closures will be set out only as-needed to maintain as much traffic flow as possible. Work will begin October 9 thru October 31 (pending weather or unforeseen delays).
