Westgate Drive Improvement Project

The W. Westgate Drive Improvement Project will reconstruct the street to meet City of Denton residential standards. The project is divided into two phases, with Phase 1 set to begin in mid-June. This phased approach aims to complete a portion of the roadway before the 2025-2026 school year to help reduce traffic congestion during school drop-off and pickup.

Phase 1 includes constructing wet utilities, streetlights, pedestrian improvements, and roadway connectivity from Bronco Way to the existing W. Westgate Drive segment leading to the I-35 access road.

Phase 2 will improve the stretch from Windsor Drive/Westgate Drive to the I-35 access road, and the stretch along Westgate Drive/Windsor Drive, connecting to the Bronco Way intersection. Project scope will also include water, sanitary sewer upgrades, streetlights, pedestrian mobility enhancements, drainage improvements, and full-depth roadway reconstruction.

The City of Denton will hold a Virtual Community Meeting on Thursday, May 20, regarding street and utility improvements in your area as part of the Westgate Capital Improvement Project (CIP).

The Westgate CIP will include street reconstruction and upgrades to the drainage, sewer, and water systems in the area. The Westgate CIP is currently in the pre-design phase. In this phase of the project, City staff will present scope options that are being considered as part of the future design of the project, pending City council direction, funding and other items. This community meeting will be followed by a City Council Work Session presentation and a future community meeting to discuss final design options, construction plans, and schedules at a later date.

The City will host the virtual community meeting to provide residents and property owners the opportunity to:
- Receive an overview of the Westgate CIP and other capital and developments occurring in the area surrounding the new Denton High School site;
- Receive an update on project scope considerations and accessibility during construction; and
- Field questions from community members.
Staff from the City of Denton, the Denton Independent School District, and the Texas Department of Transportation will be available to discuss the project and answer questions from those participating in the virtual meeting. The meeting will be hosted online using a remote format through the video-conferencing interface Zoom.

Staff is considering options to ensure necessary connectivity for residents of the Westglen neighborhood during construction and access concerns associated with the opening of the new Denton High School as well as other development in the area. Several options for improving the full current extents of Westgate and potential temporary and/or permanent extension of the roadway are being considered. Staff hosted a meeting with DISD on March 25 to discuss this project along with several other capital projects that are being coordinated near the new Denton High School site. A community meeting with area residents will be held to present options being considered.
